Survey - most parents are happy with schools

14 June 2010

With media attention falling on the possibility of dissatisfied parents starting their own schools, a research review has shown that an overwhelming majority of parents are happy with their local school provision and want to take a more active involvement.

The review, published by RISE (Research and Information on State Education) is based on wide-ranging, detailed surveys of parents’ views of their children’s schools over the past five years, including thoughts on admissions, special educational needs, and testing.

The results of the survey highlight the importance to parents of good communication from schools, with many parents stating that access to clear and regular communication about their child’s progress is a priority.

Parents placed more importance on this and other factors – such as good discipline and the happiness of their child – than on academic success measured by exam results.

Many parents said they were keen to become more involved with school life, taking an active role in supporting their children’s education inside and outside of school. These parents said they were open to guidance from the school on how to become more involved.
