Parents need to keep up with their children’s use of technology
20 May 2010
A recent study for National Family Week shows that parents may not be keeping up with their children’s use of technology.
The study asked 1000 8-15 year olds across the UK about their social and family lives, and found that 40% of girls ranked Facebook amongst the most important things in their lives, compared with just 6% of boys.
Girls also ranked technology, including social networking, amongst their major influences, alongside parents and teachers. Boys were more likely to have been influences by parents, friends and school.
The survey, which also interviewed 3000 parents, suggests that parents may be overestimating their own influence in their children’s lives, and that they may be out of touch with their children’s use of technology.
